The dynamic movement of the leaves and flowers of the design is typical of Art Nouveau style motifs. Napper worked for the textile design firm the Silver Studio from 1893 and left in 1898 to work on a free-lance basis. Absorbing the most fashionable elements of British and Continental design at the end of the 19th century, Napper produced a range of very successful stylised floral designs. He sold to many manufacturers, including G. P. & J. Baker and his textiles were particularly popular in France.\r\n\r\nThe Silver Studio was established near London in 1880 by Arthur Silver and mainly produced repeating designs for furnishing fabrics, wallpapers and floor coverings. All the leading British textile designers at the turn of the 19th centuy bought designs from the Silver Studio, which was known for its Art Nouveau patterns.","physicalDescription":"Furnishing fabric of heavy ribbed silk damask.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Harry Napper","id":"A11274"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":"probably"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"The Silver Studio","id":"A9221"},"association":{"text":"designed for","id":"x41471"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Weaving","id":"AAT53642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Ribbed silk damask","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AF3463","2012FT6819"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES309821"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Furnishing fabric","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1900","earliest":"1895-01-01","latest":"1904-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Miss Mary Peerless","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"38","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"66","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"15","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"26","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Burgos 2 5194 Col.315","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Label"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Furnishing fabric 'Burgos' of ribbed silk damask, probably designed by Harry Napper, designed for the Silver Studios, London, ca. 1900","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Parry, Linda. <font -u>British Textiles from 1850 to 1900</font> London : Victoria and Albert Museum 1993.
