This model is signed by the artist as well as by the foundry that cast it. It was intended for a large-scale monument but never brought to completion. This figure is cast by the lost-wax method. Inscribed ‘DALOU’ and ‘cire perdue’ on the back of the base and ‘Susse Frs Edn Paris’on the front. Stamped with the foundry mark ‘SUSSE FRERES PARIS LOITEURS’ and, in the middle, a trademark of blacksmiths’ tools.\n\nDalou (1838-1902) was the son of a glove maker and initially trained in drawing at the Petit École in Paris. There he was encouraged to do sculpture. In 1854 he entered the École des Beaux-Arts, where he trained for four years. He was known for his left-wing political sympathies and was involved in the establishment of the Paris Commune in 1871. After his overthrow he was forced into exile in London, where he lived from 1871 until his return to Paris in 1879. In London he frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy and he was given a teaching appointment at the National Art Training School in South Kensington (later the Royal College of Art), where he had a profound effect on the development of British sculpture.\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"The worker stands clasping a large spade in both hands. He is bare-chested, and wears a brimmed hat and baggy trousers. The front of the base is inscribed 'Suss Frs Edn Paris'. A brass stamp set into the back of the piece is inscribed 'Susse Freres Paris Loiteurs'; in the middle of the stamp is a trademark of blacksmiths' tools.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Dalou, Aimé-Jules","id":"A3578"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"x43862"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Susse Frères","id":"A9458"},"association":{"text":"casters (people)","id":"AAT25257"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AE9289"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"111 (VA)","id":"THES49918"},"free":"","case":"CA4","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":"x45409"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1894","earliest":"1889-01-01","latest":"1898-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dr Neville Goodman","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"19.22","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Susse Frs Edn Paris'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"Inscribed on the front of the base.","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed on the front of the base"},{"content":"'SUSSE FRERES PARIS LOITEURS'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"Set into the back.","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"A brass stamp Set into the back is inscribed with those words and in the middle of the stamp is a trademark of blacksmiths' tools"},{"content":"'DALOU'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"on the back at the right"},{"content":"'cire perdue'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"on the back of the base to the left"}],"objectHistory":"Given together with A.17 to A.30 and A.32 by Dr Neville Goodman, C.B. in 1971.
