Floral printed fabrics held a prominent place in every smart woman's wardrobe in the 1930s. Motifs floating on a plain ground worked admirably; navy, black and brown background colours were perennially in vogue. The use of floral decoration on cloth was hardly new but the flowers of the 1930s blossomed with fresh life and vigour. Detailed, naturalistic representations in the traditional manner were replaced with a freedom of line and form closely allied to contemporary movements in the fine and graphic arts.","physicalDescription":"Dress fabric of screen-printed silk seersucker printed with a repeat of flowers and stems in white, pink, yellow, red and green on a black background.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Atelier Ducharne","id":"A6187"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"screen printed","id":"AAT53281"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Screen-printed silk seersucker","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AF6623"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES307775"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dress fabric","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Lyon","id":"x29500"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1935","earliest":"1935-01-01","latest":"1935-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Manchester Design Registry","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1974/3231. \r\nRegistration number 356644.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dress fabric of screen-printed silk seersucker, made by François Ducharne, Lyon, 1935","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<u>Thirties Floral Fabrics</u>.
