The Queen's popularity led many in the British Empire to adopt the custom. The origins of the practice lay with St Boniface who converted the Germans to Christianity. According to legend, St Boniface used the conical shape of a fir tree as an example of the Holy Trinity. Some believe that a miraculous fir grew on the spot where the Saint chopped down an oak tree worshipped by pagans.\r\n\r\nCharles Dickens published 'A Christmas Carol' in 1843. Its enormous popularity led to an increase in the celebration of Christmas in private homes, both rich and poor, and the tree became a central feature of the festivities.","physicalDescription":"Seven children ranging in age are gathered beneath the boughs of the Christmas tree, the branches of which are filled with candles, flags and toys.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"card","id":"x30344"}],"techniques":[{"text":"chromolithography","id":"AAT53272"},{"text":"embossing","id":"AAT53826"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Chromolithography with cut paper work and embossed borders","categories":[{"text":"Christmas","id":"THES48977"},{"text":"Greeting cards","id":"THES48944"},{"text":"Ephemera","id":"THES252985"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG2301"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF (VA)","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"EDUC 3","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Greetings card","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c.1870s","earliest":"1865-01-01","latest":"1883-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"10.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"7.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Anonymous.
