He is shown holding his tespih or string of prayer beads. He is also wearing a crochet linen takke or skullcap similar to ones still to be seen on the heads of devout Muslims today. Kashgar was the centre of Islamic learning in Eastern Turkestan, a famous place of pilgrimage. Musa may have come to Constantinople with one of the caravans bringing silks and porcelain as they had done for many centuries.
