A.79-1952) are made (signed J.D.) by Jacob Dobbermann in Germany in ca. 1711.\r\nThe present example represents Louis II, Duke of Bourbon, Le Grand Condé.\r\nIt was previously thought to be a statuette of Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg, made by François Dusart (1620-1688). The accompanying statuette represents King Henry IV of France.\r\nJacob Dobbermann (1682-1745) was a Polish amber,- and ivory-carver, active in Germany. He almost certainly came from a family of amber-carver in Danzig. From 1716 onwards he was the court artist of the Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel. He is formally documented as 'Bernstein- und helffenbeinarbeiter' at Kassel in 1737. He produced ivory portrait medallions, and numerous reliefs in ivory, often depicting mythological scenes, many of them based on South Netherlandish engraved sources. ","physicalDescription":"The prince stands with his right leg forward, and looks slightly to the left. He wears a shoulder length wig and a moustache, and is dressed in armour, knee high riding books and spurs. He holds the hilt of his sword, which hangs at his left side, with his left hand. Over his right arm, which is across the front of his body, is drapery, which goes over both shoulders, down the back, and over the right forearm and top of the right leg. A small circular shaped part of the hair has been inserted at the top. He stands on an approximately square base, the front edge of which is inscribed 'J.D.'.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Dobbermann, Jacob","id":"A11479"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Ivory","categories":[{"text":"Royalty","id":"THES48899"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2012FJ0796","2018KN9988"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"111","id":"THES49918"},"free":"","case":"CA8","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1711","earliest":"1706-01-01","latest":"1715-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"A.79-1952","id":"O89318"},"association":"Ensemble"}],"creditLine":"Purchased by the John Webb Trust","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"22.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'J.D.'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"'Jakob Dobbermann'","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"on the base"}],"objectHistory":"Purchased by the John Webb Trust, 1952.
