He could\r\npaddle up to a ship in the dark, and attach\r\na charge of powder with two cords - and\r\nleave it to explode. Sheppard did go in\r\nthis boat one night from Inkerman, and would\r\nhave succeeded, but for the number of boats\r\nin the harbour on that night - the Russians\r\nwere crossing troop from the one side to the other.\r\n\r\nCapn. Keppel sent for me to\r\nmake these sketches of the boat\r\nbefore Sheppard made his\r\nattempt in the harbour of\r\nSebastopol, - in case of any\r\naccident to Sheppard.\r\n\r\nSheppard intended another trial, but bright\r\nmoon light nights followed, and before another\r\neffort could be made, Sebastopol fell.\r\n\r\nSheppard received a small grant afterwards,\r\nfrom Parliament, for his effort with\r\nthis canoe. - W.
