Dominating the skyline, beyond the walls of the castle, is its eleventh-century keep, the square Powder Tower (Pulverturm). Immediately to its right, just above the crenulated wall is a glimpse of the roof and chimneys of Kronenburg Castle (destroyed in the eighteenth century, rebuilt in the late nineteenth). Further to the right is the Romanesque Bingel Tower (Bingelturm) of St Catherine’s Church (Katharinenkirche) within the castle grounds (its Baroque crowned finial no longer extant). The two arched structures at middle centre and far right are the gatehouse and entrance to the castle complex.
