Pietro in Valle, Fano \r\nRed chalk \r\n\r\n10 3/8 x 8 (265 X 203) \tD•988-1900 \r\nPROVENANCE Thomas Dimsdale (Lugt 2426, on the verso); Dalton Bequest 1900 \r\nLITERATURE Dalton Catalogue, p. 10 (as by Cantarini); Catalogue of the exhibition Maestri della pittura del seicento emiliano, Bologna, 1959, p. 121; A. Emiliani, 'Simone Cantarini: opera grafica' in Arte Antica e Moderna, 1959, p. 433, fig. 186b \r\n\r\nAs stated in the exhibition catalogue quoted, Dr Otto Kurz was the first to notice the connection with the painting at Fano. The same catalogue refers to two other sheets of studies connected with the painting: one in the Brera (inv. no. 272), the other in the National Library, Rio de Janeiro (inv. no. A.6). The painting is illustrated in the catalogue, pl. 51 and in Emiliani's article, fig. 186d.
