Poltrone is a character from the Italian commedia dell'arte, a clumsy soldier. He is often paired with Scaramuccio (Scaramouche). Such small-scale figures were produced not only in ivory but also in porcelain at the Meissen factory near Dresden, and at other porcelain factories in Germany. The probable artist, Johann Christoph Ludwig (von) Lücke, who produced numerous ivory sculptures in Germany and elsewhere, worked as a modeller for the Meissen porcelain manufactory in his youth, and this ivory is clearly related to contemporary porcelain figures. It is related to a terracotta relief of Poltrone by Lucke, signed and dated 729, in the Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg.","physicalDescription":"The figure stands on his right foot, his left leg bent, looking to his right, holding a pistol in his right hand, with a sword hanging from his belt. His left hand is clenched. He wears a hat and ragged clothes. The ivory statuette is set on an octagonal wood base.\r\n\r\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Lucke, Johann Christian Ludwig von","id":"A11437"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carved","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Elephant ivory","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AE9382","2018KN9742"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"2A","id":"THES49831"},"free":"","case":"CA1","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":"x45409"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Dresden","id":"x28810"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1730","earliest":"1725-01-01","latest":"1734-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dr W.
