It was produced in Venice at a time when the city was a flourishing centre of production of brass wares. The decoration and decorative techniques used on these wares was influenced by the goods Venetian merchants brought back to the city from the Turkish and Arab empires. \r\n\r\nCopper dishes, however, were seldom engraved in the same way as the brass dishes, and embossed copper dishes, such as this example, are far more usual. This dish has been silver plated, probably with silver foil, to make it look more prestigious.
