This handkerchief is typical, exhibited at the Bath and West of England's Agricultural Show show of 1864 in the category of lace 'worked either in flowers, fruit, leaves or insects, strictly designed from nature'. \r\n\r\nLady Paulina Trevelyan was one of the notable figures in the industry, working to improve the standard of lace design. The handkerchief was purchased by the Museum for 16 guineas (£16.80).","physicalDescription":"Centre of lawn, in an eight-lobed shape, surrounded with bobbin lace worked in a design of ferns, repeated in the four corners.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Trevelyan, Paulina (Lady)","id":"A11453"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Sanson, S (Miss)","id":"A11454"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"lawn (textile)","id":"AAT249444"}],"techniques":[{"text":"bobbin lace","id":"x30355"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bobbin lace","categories":[{"text":"Lace","id":"THES48926"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006BB6121","2012FU6856"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES404960"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Handkerchief","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Honiton","id":"x30465"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1864","earliest":"1864-01-01","latest":"1864-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchase.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"45","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"45","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The handkerchief was made by Miss S. Sanson after the design of Lady Trevelyan.\r\n\r\nIn October of 2016 the ferns on the handkerchief were examined by an expert from the Royal Horticultural Society, who felt that ferns were all likely to be English and were depicted reasonably accurately. There was one fern which they were not able to identify with confidence from the depiction (the pair of fronds at each of the cardinal points). The others were identified as:\n\r\nHart’s tongue fern (Asplenium scolopendrium)\r\nRusty back fern (Asplenium ceterach)\r\nMale fern (Dryopteris felix-mas)\r\nHard fern (Blechnum spicant)\r\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Handkerchief trimmed with bobbin lace in a pattern of ferns, English, 1864","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Levey, Santina M., Victoria, and Albert Museum (London).
