During the period 1500-1600 in Italy ewers changed from utilitarian objects for carrying and pouring water into pure showpieces. \r\n\r\nOrnamental artists designed richly decorated examples, like this one, in the Mannerist style that emerged in Northern Italy in the 1520s. Typically such ewers had the ovate body, trumpet foot, narrow neck and curving handle placed high on the body you can see on this piece.\r\n\r\nItinerant goldsmiths and engraved pattern sheets helped to spread this style of ewer to most of those European countries where there was a flourishing goldsmithing tradition.","physicalDescription":"The ewer is beaten and chiselled; the body is surrounded with bands of foliated scrollwork.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Copper","id":"AAT11020"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Chiselled","id":"x36616"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Copper, beaten and chiselled","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AK4289"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES412416"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Ewer","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Venice","id":"x29237"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1530","earliest":"1525-01-01","latest":"1534-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"12","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Copper ewer decorated with bands of foliated scrollwork, Venetian, ca. 1530","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"scrolling foliage","id":"AAT165387"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["579-1865"],"accessionNumberNum":"579","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1865,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-12-12","recordCreationDate":"2004-01-12","availableToBook":true}}
