The decoration you see here is typically found on brass wares made in Venice in the period 1500-1550. Both the technique and motifs were influenced by the objects brought back to the city by Venetian merchants trading with the Turkish and Arab empires that bordered the Mediterranean basin. \r\n\r\nThe local craftsmen adopted the deep, bold engraving seen on the Islamic models but only very occasionally used the silver inlay that was a speciality of the Saracen artists. They also incorporated different subject matter into the decoration. Here the maker has included both Islamic arabesques and European shields.","physicalDescription":"Engraved with foliated arabesque cartouches, strapwork etc.  In the centre is a medallion with a shield of arms.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Brass","id":"AAT10946"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53829"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Brass, engraved","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AK1956","2023NR1942","2019ME7202"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412567"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Venice","id":"x29237"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1530","earliest":"1525-01-01","latest":"1534-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"19","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Brass dish engraved with foliated arabesques; in the centre is a medallion with a shield of arms, Venetian, ca. 1530","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"arabesques","id":"AAT10206"},{"text":"shields (motifs)","id":"AAT230284"},{"text":"medallion","id":"x31798"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["585-1865"],"accessionNumberNum":"585","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1865,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-12-05","recordCreationDate":"2004-01-12","availableToBook":true}}
