This supporting ring is evidently a test piece for a guild examination, and the fact that a piece of cast work was chosen for such an exercise indicates that the trade considered casting skills as critical to the craft.\r\n\r\nThe examinee would be alloted a workshop and would be required to produce a sample within a specified time. The examination was supervised by the guild and if the candidate's work was considered satisfactory, he would be presented (before the assembled members) by his sponsor as a new master.","physicalDescription":"Circular, lacquered, on the margin is a German inscription in open work.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Brass","id":"AAT10946"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Lacquered","id":"AAT53796"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Brass, lacquered","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AK4281","2006AU4934"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES409267"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Supporting ring","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1595","earliest":"1595-01-01","latest":"1595-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"2","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"9.75","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"The inscription cast around the edge reads: HAT MICH VERHERT DEM ERBAN UND FURNEHMEN PAVIO DILHERN (I was presented by the honourable and distinguished David).
