Spanish and Portuguese patrons imported ivories carved with Christian imagery from their territories overseas, such as the Philippines, Mexico and Goa. German and Netherlandish artists were renowned for their dexterity in ivory carving. Their reliefs are masterpieces of composition and virtuosity. This relief was made by Christoph Daniel Schenk (1633-1691) who was from a family of sculptors and worked in wood and ivory. He was probably trained by his father, Hans Christoph Schenk (1612-after 1656). He was active around Lake Constance, concentrating on religious subjects above all, producing large statues for altarpieces, as well as small-scale figures and reliefs in ivory.
