Although ivory, wood and stone are relatively easy to carve, other materials such as gemstones are much more demanding. Most of these carvings were made for wealthy patrons and collectors, who delighted in the rarity of the material and quality of the carving. Lücke was a German specialist in ivory who worked in England between 1757 and 1760. He made this portrait in the last year of George II’s life and probably exhibited it in London in 1761. Although small in scale, it has a dignity and grandeur more usually associated with full-size marble busts.","physicalDescription":"Ivory carved in very high relief, the background cut away.
