It also marked the point at which the tiles became available to a wider section of the public, owing to the increasing prosperity of the Dutch middle class. The design of the tiles, with its decoration in reserve on a dark ground, derives from earlier types of inlaid floor tiles. These particular tiles may have been put to use either on a floor or a wall, perhaps around a fireplace.","physicalDescription":"Tile, tin-glazed earthenware.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"},{"text":"tin glaze","id":"AAT233436"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Tin-glazed earthenware, painted","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Tiles","id":"THES48884"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AL6877","2010ED0359","2017JU6316"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137 (VA)","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"WS","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Panel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Netherlands","id":"x29020"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1580-1600","earliest":"1575-01-01","latest":"1600-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr Henry Van der Bergh through Art Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"13.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"each tile","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"These tiles were made at the time of transition between using tin-glazed tiles on walls rather than floors.
