Shortly after its discovery this ivory relief was associated with four other reliefs from the Passion, all of similar dimensions, but being the work of more than one sculptor and having originated from a number of different ensembles. The present relief seems to have been cut down at the bottom.\r\nIvory was used all over Europe for religious works of art. It was often combined with precious metals and usually took the form of relief panels, for book covers, portable altars and caskets. An almost unbroken tradition of ivory carving extends from the Roman and Byzantine empires until the end of the 14th century. From about 1250, Paris became the centre of production for figures and reliefs intended for private devotion. This panel was probably originally from an altarpiece.\r\n","physicalDescription":"The two women stand beside the tomb holding their pots of ointments. They are shown, in half-length, standing behind the tomb of Christ. Both wear short veils ojn their heads. The woman on the right looks down, with her right hand on the chest, while the figure on the left turns her head away and raises her left hand in alarm. The discarded winding-sheet of Christ overlaps the front edge of the tomb. The relief seems to have been cut down at the bottom.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"high relief","id":"AAT53626"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Elephant ivory in high relief with traces of gilded ornament on the draperies","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2013GD4554","2013GD4555","2006AE9940","2017KB3055","2019MA7861"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"111","id":"THES49918"},"free":"","case":"CA8","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Panel","id":"x47676"}],[{"text":"Relief","id":"AAT53622"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1320","earliest":"1315-01-01","latest":"1324-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gift of Mr H.B.
