Her large features did not fit the mid-Victorian ideal of beauty, but her long neck, full lips and rippling hair became synonymous with a type of beauty created by Rossetti and his circle. This photograph shows her in the artistic dress that she adopted after her marriage. It is one of a number for which she modelled in poses set by Rossetti in his garden in Chelsea. At the time they were beginning a romantic liaison, which was to last until 1875. The photograph formed the basis of the composition <i>Pandora<i>, which was executed in chalks in 1869. This is now in the Faringdon Collection at Buscot Park in Berkshire.","physicalDescription":"Photograph","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Parsons, John R.","id":"A10046"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"AAT25687"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Rossetti, Dante Gabriel","id":"A8802"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"photography","id":"AAT54225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Albumen print from wet collodion-on-glass negative","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[{"text":"Pre-Raphaelite","id":"AAT21225"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AF4608"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"TRANS6","id":"THES250500"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Chelsea","id":"x31142"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"08/07/1865","earliest":"1865-07-08","latest":"1865-07-08"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"822-1942","id":"O1092315"},"association":"Copy"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"198","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"photograph","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"147","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"photograph","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"335","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"album closed","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"260","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"album closed","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"55","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"album closed","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Dr Robert Steele presented to the V&A (in 1939) the album bound in Morris fabric and containing the original 19th century albumen prints, then (in 1942) the modern prints made from the original negatives, which then belonged to the granddaughter of William Michael Rossetti.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Photograph of Jane Morris in the garden of Tudor House by John Parsons, posed by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 08/07/1865.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Fagence Cooper, Suzanne, <font -u>Pre Raphaelite Art in the Victoria & Albert Museum</font>, London, V&A Publications, 2003. 176p., ill.
