It seems to be a mid 19th century imitation of a late 15th to early 16th century work South German work. \r\nThe production of ivories in historicizing styles in the 19th century flourished in a number of centres, including Cologne, Milan, Toulouse and Cordoba. Although not always made to deceive, unscrupulous dealers often sold them as genuine objects to their clients.\nThe scene of the beheading of St Catherine is loosely inspired by Albrecht Dürer's woodcut of the same subject of about 1496-1497. ","physicalDescription":"Diptych in ivory. In the left wing a young male saint (probably St. Colman), lying on the ground with his hands bound, is strangled by an executioner wearing a feathered hat; in the background is a castle amid trees. In the right wing St. Catherine kneels on the ground in attitude of prayer, behind her an executioner raises a two-handed sword; in the background is the wheel, and a rocky landscape.
