Leslie began illustrating children's books in the 1930s, but was also known as an aquatint engraver and painter of portraits and still-life. She worked mainly in pen and ink, but as in this image, she used watercolours, crayon or chalk to add texture and provide highlights. She always drew from life and her illustrations were well researched.","physicalDescription":"Drawing in monochrome of a group or 'shrewdness' of apes in the branches of a tree for a picture alphabet on nouns of multitude.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Leslie, Cecil Mary","id":"A11387"},"association":{"text":"illustrator","id":"x36173"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"cardboard","id":"AAT14224"},{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"Pen and ink","id":"x30618"},{"text":"Chinese white","id":"AAT13815"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand-drawn","id":"x34232"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil, pen and ink with Chinese white highlights on paper pasted onto card","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG2191"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF (VA)","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"EDUC","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"illustration","id":"AAT54200"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1963","earliest":"1963-01-01","latest":"1963-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs P.
