He worked in the French town of Mulhouse as a textile and porcelain designer before becoming a photographer. The town was a major centre for the production of wallpaper and textiles. Wallpaper manufacturers in the town sometimes maintained greenhouses so that designers could work directly from flowers. Braun’s flower photographs allowed designers to work from flowers throughout the year. This image of a summer wreath appeared in an earlier album of 300 still lifes of flowers from 1854. Braun built a successful business using the carbon printing process to reproduce high-quality art prints from his earlier negatives, such as this one. This museum bought 17 of his large flowers series in 1875 because of their use to designers.
