The habit of snuff-taking spread to China from the West during the 17th century and became established in the 18th century. People generally carried snuff in a small bottle. By the 20th century these bottles had become collectors' items, owing to the great variety of materials and decorative techniques used in their production.","physicalDescription":"The bottle is a flattened ovoid form with a flared neck and a dome-shaped stopper.\r\nIt is made of porcelain, painted in pink, blue, red, yellow and green, moulded as a perforated outer casing over an inner body. The stopper is made of green glass.\r\nThe moulded decoration depicts nine lions playing with brocaded balls. There are lappet borders around the shoulder and the base; a key-fret border around the neck and a line of dots around the neck-rim and foot.\r\nThe foot has a shallow curved indentation underneath.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulding","id":"AAT53134"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Moulded and painted porcelain with a coloured glass stopper","categories":[{"text":"ELISE","id":"THES48961"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"},{"text":"Polychrome","id":"x44055"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2010EC4333","2006AU9177"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137 (VA)","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"14","shelf":"7","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"SNUFF BOTTLE AND STOPPER","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1796-1820","earliest":"1796-01-01","latest":"1820-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"6.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"bottle only","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Poorly copied Jiaqing (1796-1820) mark in red seal characters.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Mr. George Salting, accessioned in 1910.
