Etching had been practised by artists for centuries, but its popularity declined with the rise of lithography and the dominance of reproductive engraving. By the 1860s in France, however, a significant revival was underway. The nineteenth century etching revival, which occurred in France, Britain, and America, was characterised by artists reclaimed etching as an autonomous art form, aligning themselves with the tradition of the ‘peintre-graveur’ (painter-printmaker) and looking to earlier great masters of the medium, like Rembrandt. In this renewed context, etching was valued for its immediacy and originality, ideas that informed the foundation of the Société des Aquafortistes and publications like Eaux-Fortes Modernes. \r\nLike Eaux-Fortes Modernes, L’Illustration Nouvelle was a subscription service. Each publication contained 30 original etchings by contemporary artists and was published annually. Subject matters varied, but there was a particular focus on landscapes and cityscapes. Between 1868 and 1870/1, L’Illustration Nouvelle was published by Alfred Cadart and Léandre Luce (active 1867-69), but from the 1872 edition onwards it was published by Alfred Cadart alone. Following Cadart’s death in 1875, his widow, Célonie Sophie, continued to publish L’Illustration Nouvelle under the name 'Veuve A. Cadart'. Frontispieces to the series by artists like Félix Bracquemond (E.1663.A-1901, 1868) and Félix Buhot (27759B/1, 1877) show the high ambitions of the print series, alluding to the modernity of etching and its merits over reproductive engraving.","physicalDescription":"A church visible through a large tree in the foreground of the image, the church spire obscured by the tree","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Coindre, Gaston Jean","id":"AUTH412592"},"association":{"text":"printmaker","id":"AAT25164"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Cadart","id":"A34159"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Japan paper","id":"THES257075"},{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"etching (printing process)","id":"AAT53241"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching on Japan paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[{"text":"french","id":"AAT111188"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2026PR5308"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"PHMN","id":"THES49194"},"free":"","case":"DownCopyStudio","shelf":"DU001","box":"DR009"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1870-1871","earliest":"1870-01-01","latest":"1871-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"22.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Image","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"15.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Image","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Eglise à Marast (Haute Saône)' (Church at Marast (Haute Saône)), etching by Gaston Jean Coindre, proof before letters, published by Cadart for L'Illustration Nouvelle, Paris, 1870-1871","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Proof before letters","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"Haute-Saône","id":"x29644"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"churches","id":"AAT7466"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.1776-1901"],"accessionNumberNum":"1776","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1901,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-06-24","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
