Michael Fish designed the first one when he worked at the London-based firm of Turnbull & Asser. The term 'kipper' was a pun on his name. Michael Fish later opened his own shop. He claimed, 'Very few people have had ties in their hearts like I've had'. This woven silk tie has an exuberant abstract foliate pattern in purple and gold.","physicalDescription":"Kipper tie made of printed silk satin with bold floral design of stylised white daisy like flowers with narrow brilliant orange leaves on a vivid purple ground. The tie is lined with black twilled silk, and there is a thick interlining. A bar of the tie silk is stitched behind the front for the other end to pass through when worn.\n\nThe maker's label is stitched at the back of the narrow end and is of beige silk ribbon with the name in red.\n\nA small black silk ribbon with white silk lettering is stitched below.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mr Fish","id":"A10126"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk satin lined with silk","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Men's clothes","id":"THES49043"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AT9164","2006AD0812","2006BE7271","2016JB3054","2016JB3055"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES306484"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tie","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1966-1967","earliest":"1966-01-01","latest":"1967-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr Quentin Crew","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"53","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"135","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"4.75","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'PECULIAR TO / Mr Fish / 17, Clifford Street / London W. 1.'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"English","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Label","note":"Maker's label stitched at the back of the narrow end and is of beige silk ribbon with the name in red"},{"content":"'HAND MADE / ALL SILK / MADE IN ENGLAND'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Small black silk ribbon with white silk lettering stitched below"}],"objectHistory":"Worn by Quentin Crew and lent by him to the Cecil Beaton exhibition; subsequently donated to V&A","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Kipper tie made of printed silk satin, designed by Mr Fish, 1966-1967, Great Britain","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Ties, Avril Heart, V & A Publications, 1998, p 104, plate 66."},{"reference":{"text":"<i>Fashion : An Anthology by Cecil Beaton</i>.
