From 1899 he lived in Kippen, Stirlingshire, and the rugged landscapes of Scotland were his main subject of interest. However he did travel to France and Italy making picturesque views such as this. He also spent time in France in the final year of the First World War as a commissioned artist on behalf of the Canadian government.
