The poem reads:\r\n\r\nHitokoe wa \r\nTsuki ga naita ka  \r\nHototogisu \r\n\r\n(A single call\r\nDid the moon cry out?\r\nA passing cuckoo.)\r\n \r\nThe sense is that if someone hears a cuckoo cry, by the time they look up the bird has already flown past, so it seems as if the moon has called out.
