Jones trained as an architect and travelled to the Middle East where he made a study of decorative art. In 1856 he published the <i>Grammar of Ornament</i>, analysing patterns and colours from many periods and cultures and the book became an invaluable source for many designers. \r\n\r\nJones believed that reproducing flowers and similar objects in a naturalistic way was in bad taste. He preferred to create stylised motifs and designed a range of high quality silks using this type of pattern for leading manufacturers like Warner & Sons. \r\n\r\nThis design, entitled 'Etruscan', looks back to the Renaissance when designs from the classical world were being rediscovered.","physicalDescription":"Furnishing fabric of Jacquard woven silk.
