This and its companion piece representing St. Peter (V&A Mus-number 6986-1860) probably formed part of an altarpiece and would have flanked either the Crucifix or the Virgin. Both apostles represent the joint founders of the Christian Church.\r\n\r\nAlabaster, a fine grained form of gypsum, is a smooth marble-like stone that was popular for the carving of religious sculpture. Softer than marble, it was much easier to carve and also considerably cheaper.","physicalDescription":"Alabaster statuette of St. Paul holding his sword.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"alabaster","id":"AAT11101"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Alabaster","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2010EJ4957","2010EJ4983","2006AE6688","2017KC9315"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"27 (VA)","id":"THES49835"},"free":"","case":"CA4","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"second half 16th century","earliest":"1550-01-01","latest":"1600-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"6986-1860","id":"O87397"},"association":"Ensemble"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"1'5.25\"","unit":"ft","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Acquired in 1860 for £2.\n\nHistorical significance: Both apostles represent the joint founders of the Christian Church","historicalContext":"The figures of St Peter and St Paul often flank the Crucifixion or the Virgin.","briefDescription":"Statuette, St Paul, carved alabaster, Germany, second half of the 16th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Inventory of Art Objects Acquired in the Year 1860. <u>In</u>: <u>Inventory of the Objects in the Art Division of the Museum at South Kensington, Arranged According to the Dates of their Acquisition.
