We know that it was once part of a bound volume because three of the four edges of this sheet have been gilded. There are six companion pages in the V&A collection.\r\n\r\nThe drawing is fairly crude and oversimplified. You can see from the small drooping central leaf that the artist lacked the skill to represent foreshortening. Nevertheless, the detail of the plant's structure is very accurate. The textile designer James Mitten once owned this drawing. He probably used it as source material when designing floral and foliage patterns.","physicalDescription":"Textile design","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gouache on vellum","categories":[{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2010EL5415","2006AG2310"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF (VA)","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"TOPIC","shelf":"DP1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"botanical illustrations","id":"THES399050"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c 1475 - 1525","earliest":"1470-01-01","latest":"1525-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"27.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"19","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"i Cirorca erbiii","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"written in ink"},{"content":"Cirorca Chicoree","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"written in ink"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Artist unknown: page from a mansucript herbal showing a chicory plant, late 15th or early 16th century.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"'Picturing Plants: an analytical history of botanical illustration' by Gill Saunders; Zwemmer in association with the Victoria and Albert Museum; 1995; no. 19, page 35"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"'Picturing Plants: an analytical history of botanical illustration' by Gill Saunders; KWS Publishers; 2009; no. 19, page 35"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Design","id":"THES48872"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"plant","id":"AAT132360"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Unknown artist\r\nChicory (Cichorium intybus L.)\r\nAbout 1475-1525\r\n\r\nThis drawing was probably made for a manuscript herbal.
