The habit of snuff-taking spread to China from the West during the 17th century and became established in the 18th century. People generally carried snuff in a small bottle. By the 20th century these bottles had become collectors' items, owing to the great variety of materials and decorative techniques used in their production.","physicalDescription":"The bottle is an oblong flattened flask form, the shoulders curving up to a wide short cylindrical neck. It has an irregular dome-shaped stopper.\r\nIt is made of jasper, brown with grey markings, with carved details; the stopper is made of crackled glass stained pink and set in metal.\r\nThere are masks and mock ring handles on the shoulders; the decorative rim of the stopper has a decorative twisted rope motif.\r\nThe bottle has a faceted splayed foot with a shallow indentation underneath.\r\nThe decorative effect of the bottle lies chiefly in the natural markings of the stone.
