Niczewski studied graphic design at the Ealing School of Art and the Chelsea School of Art. Soon afterwards he learnt the art of marquetry, moving from furniture to jewellery. \r\n\r\nHis jewellery is made from fine layers of natural and dyed wood veneer, often scorching the surface with hot sand and then finishing off with a glossy lacquer. In the early 1980s there was much experimentation in the use of non-precious materials for jewellery, and there was great interest internationally in Niczewski's application of this furniture-making technique to jewellery. His designs are exquisitely drawn and the pieces beautifully made, with careful consideration of the texture and grain of the wood as well as its colour.","physicalDescription":"An asymmetrical four-sided panel of marquetry, decorated with a central tapering bar of purple veneer edged with green and yellow around which is wrapped an angular spiral of red. It was at this time that she met Niczewski, and bought the pieces directly from him. Peter Niczewski in a telephone conversation of 20.03.06 suggested a date of ca. 1981 for this piece.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Brooch, asymmetrical four-sided panel of marquetry, decorated with a central tapering bar and coloured veneers, Peter Niczewski, ca. 1981","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.60-2003"],"accessionNumberNum":"60","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":2003,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LP8815","2019LT5105","2019LW2852"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-30","recordCreationDate":"2003-12-15","availableToBook":true}}
