These images of idyllic landscapes allowed wealthy people to escape to an idealised countryside that bore no resemblance to reality.  Some pastoral views show activities quite at odds with their outdoor setting. It is as if the characters had been plucked out of a drawing room.  For example in this fan a group of people are sitting in a garden watching a young man building a house of cards.  The pyramid of cards is quite high, but the next breath of wind would presumably send the cards flying.","physicalDescription":"Fan with carved and pierced sticks and guards, backed with mother-of-pearl. The paper leaf is painted with watercolours in a scene of a family in the garden at a table where a boy builds a house of cards.  The reverse is painted with sprays of flowers.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"x35861"},{"text":"mother of pearl","id":"AAT11835"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand carving","id":"x34992"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Ivory, mother-of-pearl, watercolours; hand-carved, painted","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Fans","id":"THES253017"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AT2915"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"017","id":"THES327290"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Fan","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Netherlands","id":"x29020"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1730-1750","earliest":"1730-01-01","latest":"1750-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Admiral Sir Robert and Lady Prendergast","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"1730-50, Dutch; ivory, mother-of-pearl sticks, painted paper leaf showing a house of cards in a garden","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"pastoral","id":"AAT250491"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.94-1956"],"accessionNumberNum":"94","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1956,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-09","recordCreationDate":"2003-12-15","availableToBook":true}}
