The French exhibition was held to rival the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London. The reverse of the leaf, however, pays tribute to Prince Albert, who died in 1861. He had been the inspiration and guiding force for the planning of the 1851 Exhibition in London. Prince Albert contributed greatly to the arts in Britain before his untimely death, and the inscription marks his achievement. It reads: ‘Remembrance of gratitude and respect to the late Prince Albert who in realising the idea of international Exhibitions has contributed to bring together in closer relationship the people of all countries and has thus prepared the happiness of the world’.","physicalDescription":"Commemorative fan printed on both sides to celebrate Prince Albert's initiative in promoting International Exhibitions.
