An Englishman, Jacob More, designed the garden, which was completed in 1787. It incorporates a number of ‘classical ruins’, invented by Antonio Asprucci. You can see one of them - 'the Temple of Aesculapius' - in the central vignette.\r\n\r\nThis Italian fan illustrates well the complex cultural exchange between Italy and England in the 18th century. It was probably made for an English tourist, and shows an English landscape garden designed for an Italian villa by an Englishman. The square divisions of the fan and narrow decorative borders show the influence of the Neo-classical style of the late 18th century.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gouache on vellum, with carved and pierced sticks of wood and ivory, and carved ivory guards","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Fans","id":"THES253017"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AR8916"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES327307"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Fan","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome (city)","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1790-1800","earliest":"1790-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sir Matthew Digby Wyatt and Lady Wyatt","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Painted fan, watercolour on kid, about 1785 to 1800, Italian, vew of the Temple of Aesclapius in the garden of the Villa Borghese, Rome, with Pompeian ornament","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"Rome","id":"x29106"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"tourism","id":"AAT132466"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["2208-1876"],"accessionNumberNum":"2208","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1876,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-11","recordCreationDate":"2003-12-12","availableToBook":true}}
