The decoration on this fan bears a close similarity to Chinese ceramic design. The Chinese artists who made such items were often following European models, although Europeans often saw the end result as highly 'exotic' and 'oriental'. This mixture of 'oriental' design with Rococo, Baroque and Gothic styles is known as Chinoiserie. Both Chinese and European artists worked in the Chinoiserie style, which became extremely popular in the decorative arts during the 18th century. This is a brisé fan, with no fan leaf. The sticks are decorated and held together with a fine silk cord.","physicalDescription":"Fan of ivory, piereced, gilt, painted with figures and flowers in panels.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"Attributed as Dutch when acquired in 1876."}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Painting","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"Piercing","id":"AAT231153"},{"text":"Gilding","id":"AAT53789"},{"text":"Carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved, pierced, painted and gilt ivory sticks","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"}],"styles":[{"text":"Chinoiserie","id":"AAT21167"},{"text":"export","id":"AAT120350"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2014HB1341","2014HB1342","2014HH1971","2014HB1343","2014HB1344","2006AR8913","2014HH1954","2014HH1955"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"2","id":"THES263058"},"free":"","case":"CA2","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Fan","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1720-1730","earliest":"1720-01-01","latest":"1730-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sir Matthew Digby Wyatt and Lady Wyatt","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"25.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"at tallest point when open","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"36.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"at widest point when open","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured by Conservation for Europe Galleries Project 2013","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given by Sir Matthew Digby Wyatt and Lady Wyatt, accessioned in 1876.
