A stone bench, a ruined classical colonnade and a curious pyramid-like structure (possibly an icehouse) crowd the composition.  The design of the fan is slightly unusual. It has giant still-life grapes, peacock and spaniel placed alongside the much smaller central figures.  \r\n\r\nThe vast range of embellishment seen on fans made a large assembly a very decorative affair. <i>The Spectator</i> commented in 1711 on the ‘infinite number of Cupids, Altars, Birds, Beasts, Rainbows and the like agreeable Figures’ that appeared when ladies unfurled their fans.","physicalDescription":"Fan","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gouache on vellum, with carved, painted and gilt ivory sticks and guards","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Fans","id":"THES253017"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AT2889"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"026","id":"THES327299"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Fan","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1760-1770","earliest":"1760-01-01","latest":"1770-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Emily Beauclerk","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"28.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"1.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"closed","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"52.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"open","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"3.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Fan of painted vellum with ivory sticks, 1760s, British","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"pastoral","id":"AAT250491"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.166-1920"],"accessionNumberNum":"166","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1920,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-03-13","recordCreationDate":"2003-12-12","availableToBook":true}}
