The standard of painting on the leaf was often very high, as you can see in this example of 'Venus interceding with Jupiter’.  It demonstrates all the dramatic characteristics of Baroque painting, with theatrical gestures, intense colours and exaggerated effects of light.  The fan sticks are of equally good quality. They are very delicately carved and pierced with painted cartouches and inlay of mother-of-pearl.  The artist has painted the reverse of the leaf with another popular 18th-century fan subject – a Chinoiserie scene.","physicalDescription":"Fan","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gouache on paper, with ivory sticks and guards, carved, pierced, painted and inlaid with mother-of-pearl","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Fans","id":"THES253017"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AR8886","2006BE9541","2006AT7645","2006AT2623","2006AR8885"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CNPA","id":"THES49192"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Fan","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"},{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1740-70","earliest":"1740-01-01","latest":"1770-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Admiral Sir Robert and Lady Prendergast","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"56","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"fully open"},{"dimension":"Length","value":"29","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"length of guard","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"29","unit":"cm","qualifier":"closed","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"closed","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"closed","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Fan, paper painted in watercolour, with ivory sticks and guards inlaid with mother of pearl, France or Britain, 1740-1770; Jupiter and Venus","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Jupiter","id":"N99"},{"text":"Venus","id":"N25"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.85-1956"],"accessionNumberNum":"85","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1956,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-03-23","recordCreationDate":"2003-12-11","availableToBook":false}}
