This one carries the image of ‘Aurora and the Hours with the Chariot of the Sun’. It is based on a fresco by Guido Reni from the Casino Rospigliosi in Rome, painted in 1614. The artist has faithfully translated the large scale of Reni's painting and delicately reproduced it on the fan leaf. The result demonstrates the Italian genius for fine fan painting using the pointillist (dots of colour) technique. You can see the dramatic sculptural form, exaggerated movement and gesture associated with Baroque painting even in this reduced scale.","physicalDescription":"goat vellum leaf painted in watercolour, carved and pierced ivory sticks and guards, inset with tortoiseshell or horn around the rivet.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"vellum","id":"x42751"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"},{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour on vellum, with carved ivory sticks and guards","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Fans","id":"THES253017"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2014HH1956","2014HH1968","2006AR8890"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"2","id":"THES263058"},"free":"","case":"CA2","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Fan","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"leaf"},{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Sticks, possibly"},{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Sticks, possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1780","earliest":"1775-01-01","latest":"1784-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"leaf"},{"date":{"text":"ca. 1740","earliest":"1735-01-01","latest":"1744-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"sticks"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"11.5","unit":"in","qualifier":"taken from register, not object","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"19","unit":"in","qualifier":"taken fro register, not object","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The fan was said on its acquisition to have been given by Pope Clement XIV to Sir Robert Hughes (Clement reigned as Pope from 19 May 1769 to his death in 1774).
