The cover is inscribed in ink by Gilbert Sommerlad 'Let's face it!' and decorated by him with a pen and ink sketch of comedy and tragedy masks. The end-papers and leaves are of cream paper, and has the manufacturer's label. Used by Gilbert Sommerlad (1904-1976) to mount his caricatures of performers at the New Theatre Oxford, executed between Christmas 1951 and October 1957. The caricatures, in pencil, pen and ink, watercolour and wash, are on white or cream cartridge paper and are glued to the pages of the book, except for one which is loose, on grey-brown paper. Each sketch or caricature has been titled and dated by the artist and signed by the subject.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"George Rowney & Co.","id":"A5981"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"bookbinding","id":"AAT53592"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Boards covered in a camel-coloured cloth binding, the spine and corners tipped in aubergine cloth and decorated with metal studs","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Caricatures & Cartoons","id":"THES48983"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2020MU1334"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES356598"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Albums","id":"AAT26690"}],[{"text":"Sketchbooks","id":"AAT27354"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Oxford","id":"x31203"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1951","earliest":"1946-01-01","latest":"1955-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Michael Sommerlad","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"29.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"23","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Let's face it!","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"pen and ink","method":"","position":"front cover","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Decoration","note":"Decoration; front cover; pen and ink"}],"objectHistory":"This album contains caricatures of theatrical performers and entertainers drawn by Gilbert J.Sommerlad (1904-1976) between December 1951 and October 1957 at the Oxford New Theatre.
