The deep, detailed carving that covers the surface came into fashion in Central Asia in the period 1400 to 1450. It may have been inspired by Chinese carved lacquer brought as diplomatic gifts in this period. It is possible, too, that the stone itself originally resembled jade.\r\n\r\nBuyanquli Khan was a Muslim descendant of the great Mongol conqueror Genghis Khan. For a time he was the puppet ruler of parts of Central Asia. He was assassinated by a local warlord in 1358 when he tried to assert his own authority. A magnificent domed mausoleum was erected over his grave.","physicalDescription":"Carved limestone tomb-marker, covered with a dense pattern of floral scrolls, a single pious admonition, and a date.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"limestone","id":"AAT11286"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved limestone","categories":[{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"},{"text":"Death","id":"THES48970"}],"styles":[{"text":"Chaghatayid","id":"x35907"},{"text":"Islamic","id":"x29301"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006AF7164","2015HP5194"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"11","shelf":"EXP","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sarcophagus cover","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Bukhara","id":"x35893"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"January 1536","earliest":"1536-01-01","latest":"1536-01-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"32","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"185","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"34.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"218","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"maximum","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"الحكم لله لعلا","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"carved","position":"Top","script":"","translation":"Judgement belongs to God [...] (on high?).","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"This inscription, in a very mannered version of the Eastern Kufic or New Style mode, is part of the decoration on the top of the piece."},{"content":"في الاواخر شهر رجب المرجب / سنة اثنى و اربعين و تسعمائة / من الهجرة النبوية","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"carved","position":"at one end","script":"","translation":"In the last [ten] days of the month of Rajab al-Murajjab in the year nine hundred and forty two since the Migration of the Prophet.","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"This text in defective Arabic is carved in three lines, in the thuluth style, within a square panel at the foot of the stone.
