It is one of the many superb caricatures of Edwardian music hall performers that were drawn by the artist George Cooke when he was based at the Grand Theatre of Varieties in Hanley. He compiled them in a series of albums. \r\n\r\nHerbert Beerbohm Tree’s Company from His Majesty’s Theatre put on this production of Oliver Twist. Adapted by J. Comyns Carr, it featured some of the original scenery, notably the London Bridge scene. Cast members included Cecil Collins as Bill Sikes, Tom Macfarlane as the Artful Dodger, Gertrude Lang as Oliver Twist and Hutin Britton as Nancy. A reviewer in the Staffordshire Sentinel of 14 February 1906 noted that ‘Fagin aroused the execration of the audience, but for the actor there was profound admiration and enthusiastic applause. Mr Mackintosh’s Fagin is one of those impersonations that remain in the memory’. The production returned to Hanley for another week in November 1906.","physicalDescription":"Pen, ink and wash caricature on pink paper of William Mackintosh, full-length, as Fagin in Oliver Twist, with a straggly long beard and eyebrows and long curly hair.
