He is known from his signature on another piece as Musli. The gently foliated outline of the central area mirrors that of the rim of the bowl itself.\r\n\r\nIn the mid 15th century, potters in the small town of Iznik in north-west Anatolia specialised in modest earthenware imitations of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. In the 1460s or 1470s, under the patronage of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror, they began to manufacture bowls, dishes and other pieces of fritware. These were elegant in shape and decoration, and often very large.","physicalDescription":"Deep dish with central composition of spotted, fork-like tulips, the cavetto white with a few floral and cloudband motifs.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"fritware","id":"x29419"}],"techniques":[{"text":"underglaze","id":"AAT48642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Fritware, underglaze painted in blue, turquoise and green, glazed","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Islam","id":"THES48932"}],"styles":[{"text":"Iznik","id":"AAT21623"},{"text":"Ottoman","id":"AAT21614"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006AF6776","2006AF6777","2018KT4773"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137 (VA)","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"28","shelf":"5","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Iznik","id":"x32510"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Turkey","id":"x29225"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1545-1555","earliest":"1540-01-01","latest":"1555-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"36.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dish, fritware, painted in colours with flowering plant and tulips, Turkey (Iznik), ca. 1545-1555.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Nurhan Atasoy and Julian Raby.
