His radiantly colourful drawings, like his poetry, are inspired by and seem to be a way of exorcising a traumatic childhood and adolescence spent in a succession of Catholic orphanages. After a chequered career following various occupations, including builder and bingo-caller, McQuirk began to paint and draw in earnest late in life.
