The Ottoman court renewed its patronage of Iznik ceramics during the construction of the Süleymaniye mosque in Istanbul in 1550–1557. The first Iznik tiles were produced, and potters added a bright red to the range of colours painted under the glaze using a special liquid clay.\r\n\r\nIn the following decades, Iznik potters decorated high-quality tiles in red, green and tones of blue on a white ground. Dishes, bottles and other vessels had similar decoration on white or coloured grounds.","physicalDescription":"White dish with central saz leaf between flowering stalks.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"fritware","id":"x29419"}],"techniques":[{"text":"underglazing","id":"AAT48642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Fritware, polychrome underglaze painted, glazed","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Islam","id":"THES48932"}],"styles":[{"text":"Iznik","id":"AAT21623"},{"text":"Ottoman","id":"AAT21614"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006AF6757","2006AF6758","2017KB2994"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"WN7","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Iznik","id":"x32510"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1570-1590","earliest":"1565-01-01","latest":"1590-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"27.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"White dish with central saz leaf between flowering stalks, Turkey (Iznik), ca. 1570-90.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"flowers (plants)","id":"AAT132399"},{"text":"leaves","id":"x34654"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Jameel Gallery \n\n8–11 Dishes and Tankard with Paint and Red Slip\r\nTurkey, probably Iznik\r\n1570–90\r\n\r\nIn the most celebrated Iznik production, the sage green was replaced by a bright emerald colour, and the mauves and purples by red slip.
