Although the lettering on the plates says that they are copied from ancient Roman examples, it may be that Vico also used his imagination in the renderings. After Vico's death in 1567 the copper printing plates for these prints were acquired by Antonio Lafrery (1512-1577), a very successful and print publisher and dealer in Rome. Lafrery reissued the plates in about 1573 adding extra plates at the beginning and at the end of the set for more appeal. These prints, claiming to depict Roman antiquities, would have appealed both to learned local residents and the many visitors who passed through Rome.","physicalDescription":"Ewer with a man entwined by snakes blowing a conch","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Lafrery, Antonio","id":"A10520"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Vico, Enea","id":"A11099"},"association":{"text":"Engraver","id":"x30813"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Anonymous","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"Engraver","id":"x30813"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraving on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Ornament prints","id":"THES49038"}],"styles":[{"text":"Renaissance","id":"AAT21140"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2013GN6184","2006AF6512","2017KE0828","2017KE0530","2006AP3270","2006AP3269","2019LX1650"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"EO","shelf":"131","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1573","earliest":"1568-01-01","latest":"1577-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1543","earliest":"1543-01-01","latest":"1543-12-31"},"association":{"text":"engraved","id":"AAT53829"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"28.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"plate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"19.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"plate","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"One of fourteen plates of vases engraved by Enea Vico, reissued by Antonio Lafrery in c. 1573; Italian.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Miller, E., 16th-century Italian ornament prints in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1999, p. 236 (cat. 68b)."},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Miller, E., 16th-century Italian ornament prints in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1999, pp. 126-31 (cat. 39)."},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Elizabeth Miller, 'Antonio Lafreri's architecture and ornament volumes: Crossing the boundary between books and volumes of prints in late sixteenth-century Rome', Renaissance Studies, 33 (2019), 761- 788 "}],"production":"Reissue of earlier plates by Vico from 1543 and reversed copy of Agostino Veneziano, B XIV, 547 and 546.","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"Ewer","id":"AAT45666"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.2016-1899"],"accessionNumberNum":"2016","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1899,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-29","recordCreationDate":"2003-12-02","availableToBook":false}}
