It comes from the palace complex of Madinat al-Zahra near Córdoba in southern Spain. The complex was founded in 936 by a member of the Umayyad dynasty of Spain. \r\n\r\nIt shows the powerful influence of the architecture of classical antiquity on early Islamic art. The capital has a ‘composite’ form that is entirely Roman, except for the inscription in Arabic along the top edge. \r\n\r\nThe form and decoration of column capitals in Islamic Spain soon evolved away from their classical roots. They developed much more recognisably Islamic characteristics including increasingly abstract vegetal motifs.","physicalDescription":"Marble capital with part of a Kufic inscription.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"marble","id":"AAT11443"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved marble","categories":[{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"}],"styles":[{"text":"Spanish-Umayyad","id":"x36264"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006AG8500","2006AG8499","2006AG8498","2019MC9629","2017KB3912"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"1E","shelf":"EXP","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Capital","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Madinat al-Zahra","id":"x36266"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 950-975","earliest":"0945-01-01","latest":"0975-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"A.55-1925","id":"O86588"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"Given by Dr W.
