It epitomises the glamour of 1930s fashion and captures the desirable look of the period. Here you can see a dress made of extravagant and luxurious fabrics. Dramatic contrasts of light and dark bring out the tactile and visual qualities of the silk georgette, satin and ermine fur trim.\r\n\r\nMany of the most important photographers of the day worked for <i>Vogue</i>, which became well-known for the quality of its fashion photography. Edward Steichen took this photograph. In the late 1930s he was the principle 'in-house' photographer for Condé Nast, the publisher of <i>Vogue</i>.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Steichen, Edward","id":"A6216"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"AAT25687"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"gelatin silver","id":"AAT139114"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gelatin silver print","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Evening wear","id":"THES48999"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG2155","2006AG2233"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"EDUC","shelf":"18.1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1930","earliest":"1930-01-01","latest":"1930-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"ca. 1966","earliest":"1961-01-01","latest":"1970-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"557","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"09/06/2014","earliest":"2014-06-09","latest":"2014-06-09"},"part":"Paper","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"449","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"09/06/2014","earliest":"2014-06-09","latest":"2014-06-09"},"part":"Paper","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"349","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"09/06/2014","earliest":"2014-06-09","latest":"2014-06-09"},"part":"Image","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"274","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"09/06/2014","earliest":"2014-06-09","latest":"2014-06-09"},"part":"Image","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Evening Dresses for Vogue, 1930, by Edward Steichen","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Taken from Departmental Circulation Register 1967"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Personal Choice, V&A, London, 1983.
