It was designed by Shelley Art Director, Eric Slater, who studied under Gordon Forsyth, an advocate of improvement in industrial design. Slater's slightly earlier 'Vogue' shape, though very modern and fashionably geometric, received some criticism for its infilled triangular cup handles which people found difficult to hold. Slater responded to the criticism with 'Regent', designed in 1932, and it soon became the most popular Shelley design. Selected by Gordon Forsyth to represent good design in his book <i>Twenties Ceramics</i>, its printed patterns were enhanced with enamel painting. It had a high bone content--up to 52%--and became an enduring favourite with customers.","physicalDescription":"Cup and saucer, bone china, decoration printed in black with pattern of phlox and banding in blue and pink.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Slater, Eric","id":"A10954"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Shelley Potteries","id":"A10956"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bone china","id":"AAT233473"}],"techniques":[{"text":"transfer printed","id":"AAT53922"},{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"moulded","id":"x30076"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bone china, transfer-printed in black and painted in enamel colours and moulded","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Tea, Coffee & Chocolate wares","id":"THES48886"},{"text":"Bone China","id":"THES48987"}],"styles":[{"text":"Art Deco","id":"AAT21426"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2010EC4565"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"139 (VA)","id":"THES49874"},"free":"","case":"40","shelf":"6","box":""},{"current":{"text":"139 (VA)","id":"THES49874"},"free":"","case":"40","shelf":"6","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"cups","id":"AAT43202"}],[{"text":"Saucer","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Fenton","id":"x30223"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1932","earliest":"1932-01-01","latest":"1932-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed (shape)","id":"x30230"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"ca. 1933","earliest":"1932-01-01","latest":"1934-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed (pattern)","id":"x30229"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"ca. 1933","earliest":"1933-01-01","latest":"1939-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Kay Rush","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Shelley' (within a cartouche) and  'ENGLAND'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"printed","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Maker's identification","note":"Maker's identification, printed in green"},{"content":"'Rd. 781613'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"printed","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Registration mark","note":"Registration mark; printed in green"},{"content":"'PHLOX No.'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"printed","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Printed in black (pattern name)"},{"content":"'W12189'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"painted","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Painted in red (pattern number)"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cup and saucer, bone china, 'Regent' shape, 'Phlox' pattern, designed by Eric Slater, 1932, manufactured by Shelley Potteries, Fenton, Staffordshire, ca. 1933, England","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.164:1-2003","C.164:2-2003"],"accessionNumberNum":"164","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":2003,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Cup","Saucer"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-20","recordCreationDate":"2003-11-27","availableToBook":false}}
